When household names crop up in conversations among walkers and climbers, it is a fair bet that the Lairig Ghru will feature sooner rather than later. In any season, it has a magnetism for those who love the Scottish outdoors and - in particular - the Cairngorm area. If weather and light permit, the magnificent traverse of this unique pass (from the slopes above which the River Dee begins to gather momentum as it heads for Braemar) ranks with the finest in Scotland.
On an evening such as this, it was even more dramatic than usual, with the remnants of an unexpected carpeting of early May snow surviving on the mountain tops. There was, literally, nothing else that the photographer could ask for in composing and then capturing this image. It is little wonder that so many come and marvel at the Scottish landscape, when it offers staggeringly magnificent scenery like this.
