Photograph of 2nd, Dufftown
A typical autumn morning in Speyside yielded spectacular views down the course at Dufftown.
This little jewel of golf in the Highlands of Scotland must be one of the most superbly presented venues in the entire country. From the spotless, velvet-like car park (now there is a pleasant change) to the trim little clubhouse, then upwards towards the course, first impressions are of hard work, care and attention to great detail to ensure members and visitors are both welcome and fulfilled by their visit to the club. The course climbs steeply to the east-facing hillside across which much of your round will be enjoyed; by the time you arrive on the second green, therefore, most of the hard work has been done. Some tricky challenges and wonderful views keep interest going, while the holes are far from arduous, creating mental expectations on many tees of impending birdies; most of these will, as usual, dissolve in disappointment as proliferous heather swallows wayward drives and cleverly placed bunkers snaffle approach shots. This is fun golf at its ultimate – put Dufftown on your call sheet now!
